As I explained in my last ‘A Year Of Gifts – Intro‘ post, for his birthday at the end of last year I gave my boyfriend a present with a difference. A present to last all year.
In that post I also explained that he had opened his 1st envelope and that the January voucher was for a ‘First train anywhere date’, a simple concept, where you arrive at the train station and simply take the first train leaving!
We pottered down to Basingstoke train station on a wet and windy Saturday morning to stare at the departures board. There was only one rule to the date, we couldn’t end up somewhere that either of has lived. But luckily for us, the first train to leave Basingstoke after we had arrived was to London Waterloo.
We popped on the train, armed with breakfast, tea and our tickets and settled down for the 45 minute journey into London.
Now last year for my birthday, Nick had given me a handwritten voucher promising me that we would go and see Phantom Of The Opera, sometime between then and the end of 2014. On the train we decided to kill two birds with one stone and go to the theatre as part of our date!
We took the tube over to Leicester Square and purchased the tickets for the matinee show of Phantom at Her Majesty’s Theatre. With a bit of time to kill until the show, I dragged Nick into Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! to ogle at the weird and wonderful for an hour or two.
After staring in wonder at all sorts, including a mummified hand and the Olympic torches, we decided to fill our rumbling stomachs with some lunch from Ed’s Diner before heading over to the theatre.
Words cannot describe how good Phantom was! The scenery was breathtaking, the music exactly as I remembered it and the cast fantastic. If you’re in the mood for a musical definitely go and see Phantom!
After the show we strolled through the crowds, a short distance, to Chinatown to feed our faces, again! I apologise for the lack of pictures from dinner, but I spent half the time wolfing down delicious Chinese food and the other half staring open mouthed at the cleaver wielding chef behind me!
I was a little disappointed that the first train wasn’t to anywhere ‘new’ but we had such a lovely day, by the time we were on the train home, cuddled up, I’d quite forgotten my disappointment.
Don’t forget, Nick is due to open envelope number 2 very soon, so keep checking back to see what February’s voucher will be!
