Pat-a-cake Pat-a-cake

Being the avid baker that I am, I was asked last week to choose some baking based items to review from The Craft Company. I was allowed to choose up to £10 worth of items to use in baking projects, a very generous offer! As I had and still have a couple of occasions that I needed to make cakes for, I jumped at the chance to get my hands on some goodies.

On Saturday my family and I were invited to a friend’s 70th birthday party. I had been asked to make the cake a while ago and I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Since I had been asked to choose items from The Craft Company, I thought it would be sensible to select things that I could use on the 70th birthday cake. So here’s what I chose for this cake:

Renshaws Professional Ready To Roll Sugarpaste Icing in White (500g)*

Sugarflair Spectral Food Colouring Paste in Primrose *

As it was a rather large cake, I had to add to the icing I received to make up the amount needed, but I bought the same brand to ensure a fair review. The colouring paste was just what I needed as I had decided to colour the cake a light primrose yellow, so this was perfect.

I was surprised at how orange the colouring was when I received the package, but from experience I know that these colours are very concentrated and that a little of this stuff goes a long, long way!

I tinted the white sugarpaste by using a tiny amount of the colouring paste and kneading it through, to create an even pale primrose yellow colour.

The cake was a vanilla Madeira sponge, a 10″ square cake on the bottom and a 7″ square cake on the top. It was filled and covered with vanilla buttercream before being iced with the primrose yellow fondant icing, and decorated with handmade purple iced flowers and purple ribbon.

I was really happy with all aspects of my order with The Craft Company, the dispatch time was quick and there’s a great choice of products to choose from, I could spend all day choosing things! The Craft Company stocks all the major cake decorating brands such as Renshaw and Sugarflair so you can be sure of the quality, which is something you need when the pressure is on to make a spectacular cake. Keep an eye out for my review of the other products I ordered from The Craft Company.
